We Are All Here
burning together
I recently spent two weeks at our yearly rental cottage. I always treasure and truly enjoy this time, regardless of the uncertainty of the weather (cool and wet this year).
Ahead of this time, I wrote an intention: I wanted to do some simple drawing as a way of paying attention, without words.
Surprisingly, this became three weeks with no writing, until today. I was pleased with how paying attention yesterday at the beginning of our first major heatwave became today’s poem.
We Are All Here
Our walk clung to the shade
Yet Billy’s tongue hangs low
Water and panting give little relief
Bright greens surround us
Stems of grass who evaded the whipping cord
Tickle my legs
This extreme heat has not yet done damage
A young robin plays in the branches
Unlike any staid adult keeping lookout
It tumbles and cavorts
Dancing with the leaves
An insect settles on my arm
Tiny feet kissing my skin
Exploring this new landing
Our space is verdant
Fed by the rains and cooler air
Of earlier days
My dog still pants
Heat zaps our energy
My mind recalls the stories
Of Europe’s prolonged heatwave
The insect speaks to me
Or perhaps the tree
We are all here

Lovely observations, and reminder of our deep connectedness.
Glad you could recharge! Thanks for sharing.
